Quiet areas, lively areas
| Area | At night | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Brotteaux | Mostly quiet | Residential, with restaurants but few late bars. Walking distance from Part-Dieu. |
| Croix-Rousse plateau | Mostly quiet | Village feel at the top of the hill. The slopes below are livelier. |
| Monplaisir (8th) | Mostly quiet | Residential; avenue des Frères-Lumière is busier. |
| Confluence | Mostly quiet in the evening | Modern district; a few venues create pockets of activity. |
| Presqu’île: rue Mercière, Terreaux | Lively | Restaurants, terraces and bars until late. |
| Vieux Lyon, Saint-Jean | Lively in places | Busy in the evening; some streets stay calm. |
| Guillotière | Lively | Bars and restaurants; noise varies a lot from street to street. |
These are tendencies: a room on a busy avenue can be noisy in a quiet area, and a courtyard room can be silent right in the centre.
Picking a quiet room
- Ask for a room facing the courtyard, or on a high floor.
- Check the map for what is right below the hotel: a bar, a terrace or a lively square can be heard late.
- Read recent reviews and search for the word “noise”.
- On Friday and Saturday the metro runs until 2 am: lively streets stay lively longer.
- During the Fête des Lumières, the Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon are the most crowded: stay in Confluence or Brotteaux instead.
Where to stay
Where you will sleep best:

Brotteaux & Tête d'Or
The safest bet for a quiet night, with Parc de la Tête d’Or and Part-Dieu within walking distance.

Croix-Rousse
Aim for the plateau at the top: quiet, with a village feel. The slopes are livelier.
