Step-free Lyon: where to stay?

Lyon has two hills, Fourvière and Croix-Rousse, and many perfectly flat districts. With a pushchair, heavy luggage or a wheelchair, the area makes all the difference.

In short: Stay in a flat area: Presqu’île, Part-Dieu, Confluence or Brotteaux. Avoid the Croix-Rousse slopes, which are full of stairs. All trams and all metro stations are accessible, except Croix-Paquet station. Check the hotel has a lift before booking.

  • The funiculars to Fourvière and Saint-Just leave from Vieux Lyon. At Minimes, board the car marked with a wheelchair so you can use the lift on the way out.
  • A lift can be out of order: check alerts on the TCL website or app before you set off.

What to check before booking

  • A lift: many old buildings in the centre have none, or a very small one.
  • A step-free entrance.
  • For a wheelchair: an adapted room and bathroom, confirmed in writing by the hotel.
  • On the booking site, use the accessibility filters and read the room details.
